Cooking up Cultural Connections:  Family Book Club                                                                      $2,000.00

Hastings Elementary School

This program is a book group for families of English Language Learners in grades k-2.  Bimonthly evening sessions where teachers and specialists will read and discuss books with families, engage in an activity to accompany the book, and share a ‘pot-luck’ dinner with other families.

 

 

Mountain Dulcimers for the Elementary Classroom                                                                        $1,300.00

This program will introduce elementary school children to the Mountain Dulcimer, a unique American folk instrument.  This grant will enable the teachers to purchase 25 Dulcimers to be used as part of a curriculum on learning American history through song.

 

Bringing Multi Modal Teaching to the Next Level                                                                             $2,093.55

This project will allow students in a self-contained special education program to benefit from the use of educational and life learning skills through the use of an ipad.  The purchase of 3 ipads will enable the teacher to meet the needs of students in the areas of academics, speech, daily living skills, OT, as well as target reducing challenging behaviors by giving more opportunity for communication.

 

Poet in Residence                                                                                                                                           $2,000.00

This grant provides the funds for a Poet in Residence for one week.  The poet will teach poetry writing classes, introduce components of performance poetry, conference with individuals and groups on the student’s own writing, and meet will some groups to critique and offer advice.  There will also be a poetry slam with other poets from Massachusetts competing with each other.

 

 

 

Library Learning Commons – Cyber Café                                                                                               $  240.00

As part of a newly created space in the Westborough High School Library, this grant will allow for seminars to be taught after school for students interested in doing research.  It will allow time for students to be introduced to the different ways literacy can be integrated into their projects through information and media literacy.

 

The Power of Resilience                                                                                                                              $2,200.00

This grant will allow the teacher to be trained and purchase curriculum on how to teach resilience skills.  The program will be taught as part of the Wellness Program and integrated into curriculum units in English and Psychology classes.

 

 

WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering)                                                                                        $2,422.71

This grant will allow for the creation of a Women in Science and Engineering club at Westborough High School.  There will be bimonthly meetings which will alternate between working on science projects and presentations by female professionals in the fields of science and engineerning.

 

 

Bringing the Museum to the Students                                                                                                   $2,250.00

This grant will provide funds to build object handling kits for the Social Studies Department at Westborough High School.  The purchase of items for the ‘text set’ will enable students to see and touch authentic items from a given point in history.  A variety of items will include, but not be limited to, objects, photos, paintings, as well as written primary sources from journals, newspaper articles, and speeches.

 

 

Poetry Power                                                                                                                                                    $2,100.00

This project will bring the creative art of performance poetry to WHS.  Students will participate in a series of interactive performance based seminars and workshops throughout the school year with will culminate in a statewide Teen Poetry Festival at MIT.

This grant will allow for the purchase of ipads for students with cognitive impairments and fine motor weaknesses to access apps that help them better understand and navigate daily living skills.

This is the third year of a three year grant for the WHS Robotics Team.  It allows students the opportunity to build robots and compete in Robotics competitions through FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).
